Kedarnath Yatra 2026: Pilgrimage Continues Amidst Weather Challenges; Heli Services Impacted

Date:

The sacred Kedarnath Dham Yatra is currently in full swing, with thousands of devotees making their way through the rugged terrain of the Himalayas to seek blessings. However, the pilgrimage is facing its first major seasonal hurdle as unpredictable weather conditions sweep across the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand.

District Magistrate Vishal Mishra recently provided an update on the ground situation, noting that while the foot pilgrimage remains steady, technical and aerial operations have faced significant setbacks.

Steady Progress on the Ground

Despite the overcast skies and intermittent rainfall, the spirit of the devotees remains undeterred. Hundreds of pilgrims, adorned in colorful raincoats and ponchos, continue to trek the 16-kilometer route from Gaurikund to the Kedarnath temple. The administration has confirmed that the yatra is “progressing at a steady pace,” with security personnel and sector magistrates stationed at various intervals to ensure the safety of the travelers.

The local administration has been working around the clock to manage the influx of pilgrims. With daily footfall often reaching between 25,000 and 30,000 during this peak month of May, the focus has shifted toward crowd management and ensuring that basic amenities like medical aid, drinking water, and shelter are readily available along the trekking path.

Helicopter Services Hit by Bad Weather

While the trekking route remains open, the same cannot be said for the skies. Helicopter services, which are a lifeline for elderly pilgrims and those with time constraints, have seen frequent disruptions over the last few days.

Heavy fog and low visibility in the Kedarnath valley have made flight operations hazardous. According to DM Vishal Mishra:

Aviation experts note that flying in the narrow Himalayan valleys requires high visibility. Even a slight increase in moisture or a sudden drop in temperature can lead to dense cloud cover, forcing operators to ground their fleets for hours or even days at a time.

Vital Weather Guide for Pilgrims (May 2026)

If you are planning to travel to the Dham this week, it is essential to be prepared for fluctuating temperatures and sudden showers.

LocationDay TempNight TempConditions
Kedarnath5°C – 12°C-2°C – 5°CCold, frequent fog, and evening rain
Gaurikund12°C – 20°C8°C – 12°CPleasant during day, cool at night

Essential Travel Tips

To ensure a safe and smooth journey during these inclement weather phases, the administration and local guides recommend the following:

  • Layered Clothing: Temperatures can drop sharply within minutes. Ensure you carry thermal inners, a heavy fleece or woollen jacket, and a waterproof outer layer.
  • Rain Gear: A high-quality poncho or raincoat is mandatory. Umbrellas are often difficult to manage on the narrow, windy trekking paths.
  • Buffer Days: If you have booked a helicopter ticket, always keep at least 1-2 buffer days in your itinerary. Weather-related cancellations are common, and flights only resume once the “clear” signal is given by the Air Traffic Control.
  • Health Check: Given the low oxygen levels at 11,755 feet, pilgrims are advised to trek slowly and stay hydrated. If you feel any symptoms of Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS), report to the nearest medical relief center immediately.

The Uttarakhand government continues to monitor the situation through the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police. Pilgrims are encouraged to stay updated via official weather bulletins and register themselves on the official Yatra portal before beginning their journey.

Despite the mist and the cold, the chant of “Jai Kedar” echoes through the valley, proving once again that faith often stands stronger than the elements.

Are you planning to travel via the trekking route or were you hoping to secure a helicopter slot for your visit?
