DEHRADUN – The air at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state headquarters in Dehradun was thick with the scent of marigolds and the sound of crackers on Monday, May 4, 2026. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami joined hundreds of exuberant party workers to celebrate what he described as a “historic shift” in Indian politics, following the party’s decisive performance in the West Bengal and Assam Assembly elections.
A Saffron Wave from “Gangotri to Gangasagar”
Addressing the media and a sea of saffron-clad supporters, CM Dhami did not hold back his enthusiasm. The Chief Minister, who had campaigned extensively in the eastern states, framed the victory as a spiritual and political unification of the country.
Dhami highlighted that the BJP had secured a third consecutive term in Assam, a feat he attributed to the “pro-incumbency” wave generated by the double-engine government. More significantly, he cheered the BJP’s performance in West Bengal, where the party crossed the 200-mark in the 294-member assembly, ending 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule.
Key Highlights of the Celebration
The festivities in Dehradun were marked by several traditional and symbolic gestures:
- Temple Prayers: Earlier in the day, special “Vishesh Pujas” were conducted at the sacred Badrinath and Kedarnath temples. These prayers were offered on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and CM Dhami as a gesture of gratitude for the mandate.
- Cultural Fusion: In a nod to the states they were celebrating, BJP workers distributed ‘Jhalmuri’ (a popular Bengali snack) alongside traditional sweets, symbolizing the cultural bridge between the Himalayas and the Bay of Bengal.
- Youth Contribution: CM Dhami specifically lauded the Uttarakhand BJP Youth Wing. He noted that nearly 50 workers from the hill state had traveled to West Bengal and Assam to assist in election management and grassroots campaigning.
Shifting Political Landscapes
The results, which became clear by Monday evening, showed the BJP-led NDA bagging 102 out of 126 seats in Assam. In West Bengal, the party scripted history by breaching the “Bengal fortress,” ousting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who lost her individual battle in the Bhabanipur constituency to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari.
Chief Minister Dhami pointed out that the results in Puducherry, where the NDA also formed a government, further solidified the party’s footprint in the South and East. He asserted that the “miracle” seen in these results proves that the public’s trust in Prime Minister Modi’s leadership remains unshaken.
Looking Ahead: Momentum for the Hill State
For the local leadership in Uttarakhand, these victories serve as a massive morale booster. State BJP President Mahendra Bhatt, who stood alongside the Chief Minister during the celebrations, mentioned that this momentum would be carried forward into local governance and future developmental projects in the state.
The atmosphere remained electric late into the evening, with firecrackers lighting up the Dehradun sky. While the opposition in the state, led by the Congress, looked toward their own gains in Kerala for inspiration, the day undoubtedly belonged to the ruling party.
As the festivities concluded, CM Dhami reaffirmed his commitment to the “vocal for local” and “development for all” agendas, stating that the success in the East is a “testament to the changing heart of the nation.”
