Lucknow/Haridwar: With the Kanwar Yatra 2026 set to begin on July 30, authorities across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have intensified preparations to ensure a safe, smooth, and well-organized pilgrimage for millions of devotees.
Comprehensive arrangements, including enhanced security, sanitation, traffic management, medical services, and emergency response systems, are being put in place across key pilgrimage routes and religious destinations.
State authorities have significantly strengthened security measures to manage the large influx of pilgrims expected during the annual yatra.
Key security measures include:
- Deployment of thousands of police personnel.
- Multi-layered security monitoring.
- Sector-wise crowd management.
- Emergency response teams.
- Continuous surveillance along pilgrimage routes.
The arrangements are aimed at ensuring smooth movement of devotees while maintaining public safety.
In Prayagraj, preparations are in full swing along the major Kanwar routes.
Authorities are undertaking:
- Road repair work.
- Installation of barricades.
- Traffic management measures.
- Sanitation drives.
- Route monitoring.
More than 1,500 police personnel will be deployed across:
- 4 Super Zones
- 7 Zones
- 26 Sectors
To strengthen safety, teams from:
- National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)
- State Disaster Response Force (SDRF)
- Flood Relief units
- Water Police
will remain on alert at ghats and water bodies throughout the pilgrimage.
Health and emergency preparedness form a key part of this year’s arrangements.
Authorities have planned:
- Ambulances stationed along pilgrimage routes.
- Medical teams at health centres.
- Healthcare support near major Shiva temples.
- Rapid emergency response services.
These measures aim to provide immediate medical assistance to pilgrims whenever required.
The Saharanpur Municipal Corporation has launched extensive sanitation campaigns to ensure a hygienic environment for devotees.
Special arrangements include:
- Continuous cleaning of pilgrimage routes.
- Deployment of sanitation workers and volunteers.
- Waste management initiatives.
Additionally, 44 Kanwar camps have been established to provide essential services such as:
- Drinking water.
- Toilets.
- Bathing facilities.
- Lighting.
- Security assistance.
In Ayodhya, authorities are closely monitoring the Saryu River due to rising water levels.
Additional personnel from:
- Jal Police.
- Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC).
- State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
have been deployed along the riverfront to respond quickly to any emergencies and ensure the safety of pilgrims visiting the holy city.
Preparations are equally extensive in Haridwar, one of the most significant destinations during the Kanwar Yatra.
Authorities are focusing on:

- Sanitation.
- Pilgrim amenities.
- Surveillance systems.
- Traffic regulation.
- Security deployment.
For efficient crowd management, the entire Kanwar Mela area has been divided into:
- 18 Super Zones
- 40 Zones
- 141 Sectors
This zonal approach is expected to improve coordination among security and administrative teams.
The Kanwar Yatra is one of North India’s largest annual religious pilgrimages, observed during the holy month of Shravan.
During the pilgrimage, devotees collect sacred Ganga water from holy rivers and carry it to Shiva temples, where they perform Jalabhishek as an offering to Lord Shiva.
This year, the pilgrimage will run from July 30 to August 11, culminating on Shravan Shivratri.
