Mahendra Bhatt Backs Special Assembly Session in Uttarakhand Over Women’s Reservation Bill Issue…

Date:

DEHRADUN, UTTARAKHAND — Uttarakhand BJP President Mahendra Bhatt has expressed support for the state government’s decision to convene a one-day special session of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly on April 28, stating that it is necessary to address the concerns arising from the non-passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill.

Speaking in Dehradun, Bhatt said that there is widespread anger across the country over the failure to pass the bill, which was aimed at providing greater political representation to women. According to him, this sentiment is not limited to the public but is also being reflected in legislative bodies across different states.

He welcomed the decision of the state government to call a special session, saying it provides an important platform to discuss why a significant portion of the population—particularly women—continues to be deprived of their rights. He emphasised that such discussions are essential in a लोकतांत्रिक system where issues of representation and equality must be addressed openly.

Bhatt stated that the Women’s Reservation Bill has been a long-standing demand and is seen as a crucial step toward ensuring equal participation of women in politics and governance. He said that delaying or blocking such measures raises serious concerns about the commitment to gender equality.

He further added that the special session is expected to focus on the reasons behind the bill not being passed in Parliament, and to express the state’s position on the issue. According to him, it is important for legislative bodies to take a clear stand on matters that directly impact a large section of society.

The BJP leader also indicated that a resolution of condemnation is likely to be passed in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly, reflecting the state’s dissatisfaction over the development. He said that similar resolutions may also be adopted by District Panchayats and Municipal Corporations, indicating a broader response across different levels of governance.

Bhatt emphasised that such resolutions are a way to voice collective concern and send a strong message about the importance of women’s rights and representation. He said that the issue goes beyond politics and is fundamentally about justice and equality.

He also highlighted that women make up nearly half of the country’s population, and ensuring their participation in decision-making processes is essential for balanced and inclusive development. According to him, empowering women politically leads to better governance and more effective policymaking.

The BJP President reiterated that his party has consistently supported measures aimed at women’s empowerment, and he expressed hope that efforts will continue to ensure that women receive their rightful place in the political system.

Observers note that the decision to hold a special session reflects the growing political focus on the Women’s Reservation Bill and the differing views among political parties regarding its implementation.

Bhatt’s remarks also underline the importance of state legislatures in shaping public discourse on national issues, as they provide a platform for discussion and expression of regional perspectives.

He further said that discussions during the session are expected to be comprehensive, covering not only the political aspects but also the social and developmental impact of women’s representation. He added that such debates can help create awareness and build consensus on important issues.

The upcoming session is likely to witness active participation from members across party lines, as the issue of women’s reservation has been widely debated in the political sphere.

Bhatt concluded by thanking the state government for taking the initiative and expressing confidence that the session will highlight the importance of ensuring equal rights for women and contribute to the larger national conversation on the issue.

The special session of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly is expected to serve as a significant platform for addressing concerns over women’s political representation, reflecting both public sentiment and political priorities on the issue.
