Tragic Thursday in Uttarakhand: 11 Dead in Two Separate Road Accidents

Date:

The serene hills of Uttarakhand were gripped by tragedy this week as two devastating road accidents claimed the lives of 11 people within a 24-hour span. The incidents, occurring in the Tehri Garhwal and Rudraprayag districts, have once again highlighted the perilous nature of Himalayan motorways and the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures in the region.

The Tehri Garhwal Tragedy: A Return from Grief Ends in Disaster

The most severe of the two accidents took place on Thursday afternoon in the Tehri Garhwal district. A utility pickup vehicle, a Bolero Camper, was transporting approximately 10 passengers who were returning from a funeral in Haridwar.

The vehicle was navigating the Chamba–Koti Nala road near Nail village when the driver reportedly lost control. The utility vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a nearly 300-meter-deep gorge. The impact was catastrophic, leaving the vehicle a mangled heap of metal at the bottom of the ravine.

Casualty Breakdown in Tehri:

  • Fatalities: 8 individuals lost their lives.
  • Injuries: 2 passengers were rescued with serious injuries.

According to District Magistrate Nitika Khandelwal, preliminary assessments suggest the accident may have been caused by driver fatigue. “It seems probable that the driver was feeling sleepy or dozed off, as the vehicle suddenly took a turn and plunged into the gorge,” she noted. The victims were residents of the Nailchami Patti region in Ghansali, returning to their village after performing the last rites of a loved one.

Second Fatal Incident in Rudraprayag

As the state was reeling from the news in Tehri, a second fatal accident was reported from the Rudraprayag district. A Bolero lost control on the Bhiri-Kakola motorway in the Agastyamuni block and fell into a deep ditch.

Information regarding this mishap reached authorities nearly 12 hours after it occurred, as the accident took place late Wednesday night in a remote area. A joint rescue operation by the Ukhimath police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) eventually recovered the bodies of three individuals, including the driver.

High-Level Response and Relief

The scale of the tragedy prompted immediate reactions from both the state and central governments. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed profound grief, stating, “I pray to God that the souls of those who lost their lives attain a place at His divine feet.” He has instructed the district administrations to ensure that the survivors receive the best possible medical care without any delay.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his condolences via the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). In addition to expressing sympathy for the bereaved families, the Prime Minister announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF):

  • ₹2 lakh ex-gratia for the next of kin of each deceased victim.
  • ₹50,000 for each of the injured.

A Call for Vigilance on Hill Roads

These twin tragedies serve as a somber reminder of the risks associated with mountain driving, especially during long journeys that can lead to driver exhaustion. Local authorities have reiterated the importance of regular breaks and vehicle maintenance, particularly as the state prepares for the upcoming pilgrimage season, which sees a massive influx of vehicular traffic on these narrow, winding roads.

The deceased in the Tehri accident have been identified as residents of local villages including Thela and Chakreda. As the communities mourn their sudden loss, the two survivors continue to undergo treatment at the District Hospital Baurari, where they are currently reported to be in stable condition.
